Family Selection Criteria

Are you ready to own a Lafayette Habitat for Humanity home?
 
To be considered as a candidate to purchase a Lafayette Habitat for Humanity home you should be able to answer “Yes” to all of the following questions:
 
1. Are you a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident?
2. Do you currently live OR work in Acadiana and have been here for at least the past year?
3. Are you a first-time homebuyer (which means you have not owned a home in the past three years)?
4. Can you demonstrate a NEED FOR HOUSING because your present housing is not adequate (which means it is unsafe, not maintained, overcrowded, temporary, and/or unaffordable)?
5. Can you demonstrate an ABILITY TO PAY?
o Prove a steady source of income
o Show good credit with few bad debts
o Demonstrate a positive monthly cash-flow (a net balance of cash-on-hand after all expenses are paid)
o If you have declared bankruptcy, it must have been discharged for three years. If it was dismissed, you must have paid off all of the debts to the bankruptcy.
o Does your yearly income fall within or near the minimum and maximum limits below:

6. Are you WILLING TO PARTNER with Lafayette Habitat for Humanity? As part of the program you will be required to spend a minimum of 300-450 hours helping to build Habitat homes, including your own. Construction takes place Tuesday-Saturday. You will also need to attend required homeownership classes.
 
 
If you (and your co-applicant, if you have one) answered "no" to any of these questions, you may not be ready to be a Habitat for Humanity homeowner. You can call the Lafayette Habitat office at 337-261-5041 to discuss your situation in more detail.
 
If you answered “yes” to all of the questions, you might qualify for our Homeownership Program.

If you would like to apply for the Habitat Homeownership Program,  complete the online interest form to be notified of the date, location, and time for the next Applicant Orientation Meeting.
